This raku fired vessel by David Schembri showcases the elegance of raku. Raku pottery is fired outdoors in a propane fired gas kiln. The pottery going into the kiln is pre-coated with glazes containing copper and other metallic ingredients. After heating to a temperature of 1900 degrees F, the kiln is opened and the red-hot pots are removed an placed in a metal container lined with combustibles such as newspaper and wood shavings. Other organic materials such as horse hair are used to create the distinctive dark lines. David is a popular pottery instructor at META4 Gallery, as well as an accomplished potter.
Note: Raku fired pottery is for decorative use only and is not food safe or impermeable to water.
