Glass 'Landscape' Pendants by Julia Spittel
Years of work in other media such as landscape photography, pottery and jewellery making have led Julia to her current process of crafting her landscapes in glass and firing them in her potter’s kiln! Her skill in a variety of arenas has allowed her to cross artistic boundaries and develop unique and unexpected approaches to glassmaking such as “glass grafting” and “glass marquetry”. In order to create some of the organic features in her scenes, Julia makes many of the components from scratch since they do not exist as raw materials. For example, her trademark “Flowerpot Glass” captures the molten flow of the glass at its top firing temperature of 1670 degrees F. The wispy character of the glass resulting from this process is used to compose the softer elements of nature like wind, water, leaves, fire and smoke.
Julia’s “elegant-organic” aesthetic is highly unique, immediately recognizable and beautifully wearable. All work is handmade by Julia in Aurora, Ontario. “Although I make each pendant here in my studio, I always say a piece is only finished when it finds its human! This union is unmistakable. Glass is special in that in addition to its colour, it has a luminosity that simply lights you up when you find THE piece for you”.
