About Us
Upscale, contemporary, and oozing creativity, Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery has become Durham’s destination for fine craft and art. Four artist-entrepreneurs took less than a year to establish this cultural and artistic hub that continues to thrive in the heart of beautiful Port Perry.
Meta4 Gallery first opened in July 2005 in a shared retail space on Port Perry’s picturesque Queen Street. Within 6 months, owners Jennifer Hardie, Birgitta MacLeod, Carey Nicholson and Bonnie Thomson had run out of space; 36 artists had increased to more than 60 and demand for large, original works was on the rise. Fortunately, an ideal space became available and Meta4 moved a few doors west to 200 Queen Street. The newer location is bigger, brighter, and features a studio space where workshops and courses are offered for adults and youth.
Meta4 now features the work of over 100 Ontario artists and artisans and continues to be actively involved in the community through outreach and arts education, public exhibitions, community events and fundraising. In March 2007, after less than two years in business, the Gallery’s impact was recognized by a nomination for the Scugog Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year.
Jen, Birgitta, Bonnie and Carey share time at the gallery and each is involved in her own artistic work. Jen is a mixed media sculptor working primarily with paper mache, Birgitta also works in paper, creating hand-made cards and mixed media works. Bonnie is a glass artist creating functional and beautiful pieces for home and table and Carey is a fibre artist whose specialty is vibrant custom dyed baskets. You can find their work at other Canadian galleries and shops. Each partner also makes time for teaching, community, and family life.
Come to Meta4 Gallery and introduce yourself… we’d love to meet you!
